Family in need
Hello Grace Street,
As you know, tomorrow night is our annual Candlelight Service at 7pm, are you as excited as I am? It promises (weather permitting, of course) to be a wonderful evening.
I am writing additionally to make you aware of a current need in our midst. A woman called the church phone this week in need of help. Specifically, she and her three children are in need of winter clothing. In response, I wanted to give the congregation (all of you) the opportunity to bless this family with the gift of clothing.
Tomorrow night, as you prepare to come to church, will each of you take a moment and look through your closets, drawers, or shelves for any extra winter clothing? Bring any winter clothes that might fit one of the family members to church tomorrow night and I will see to it that they receive them on Tuesday.
Specifically, we need:
Men's/Boy's clothing size XL (15 yr old)
Men's/Boy's clothing size Large (13 yr old)
Women's/girl's clothing size 5-6(14 yr old)
Women's size 4-5 (Mother)
Thank you for your response and I look forward to seeing what we can pull together for this family!
Blessings,
Pastor Russ

Sunday night's accident
Sunday evening as the Grace Street volunteers were setting up the room at Washburn Hall on the EDS campus, a portion of the concrete drop-ceiling broke free from it moorings and swung down on several of those in the room. It was a very large piece (appx 12 feet by 40 feet) weighing several tons. However, by the hand of God, no one was seriously injured. However, four adults and one child sustained injuries that required treatment. All were taken to local hospitals and were tested, treated, and released early Monday morning. Please join us in prayer as we contend for full and speedy recoveries for all involved.
We are also thanking God today for his provision and power as he leads us through the process of recovery and moving forward. God is working!
I will have details regarding our new meeting location in the next day or two.
If you have any questions about the incident, you can contact me at 617-233-9671 or via email at rschlecht@hotmail.com

The Prophetic Role of the Church
For the months of January and February, we will be using scripture to explore the role of the church as it seeks to bring truth and healing to our world. The ability of the Body of Christ (the church!) to understand and see our world as Christ would see it can be sorely lacking at times. Throughout our own nation’s history, we have noted time after time that the church has been unable or unwilling to comprehend the very times in which it dwells, ceasing to be a prophetic voice of wisdom and healing. And though we began our series on January 8th, please join us as we continue to seek understanding from our Lord in this area! Pastor Russ

House Church for the Summer
Grace Street has been enjoying a fabulous summer. Each Sunday evening we are shuttling from the church in Harvard Square to the RiCharde's home in Newton and meeting for a potluck dinner, a short service, and a time of fellowship and fun. This summer has granted us great opportunty to really get to know each other. During the school year Pastor Russ always allows us 15 minutes or so to meet new people at the break in service, but eating together and washing dishes side by side is a much easier way to really hear each others' life stories and catch up on our weeks. Plus there have been so many new people visiting Grace Street this summer. What a great venue to really get to know someone new! If you are "home" in Boston on the weekend or just traveling through, please join us on Sunday evening. Shuttles are available from the church at 5:30 PM; and returning back to Cambridge beginning at 7:45 PM. Bring anything to contribute to the potluck. Hope you are having a fabulous summer!

Pastor Russ and Ana Maria Patino are engaged!
Holy cow, can you believe it? She said, "Yes"! I am still in shock. There we were, last Thursday night on the roof of a downtown Boston apartment in 20 degree weather... flowers, candles, a space heater, music playing, a ring... and beautiful Ana Maria Patino seated next to me. I proposed, she said yes, and well.. we are getting married! We spent the next 3 days in Seattle celebrating with my family and the last few days in Miami with hers. We will let everyone know a date as soon as we have one. Amazing. God is faithful.

Christmas Compassion Service
On Sunday, December 14th we met at Harvard and wrapped over 100 presents purchased for needy families in Jamaica Plains and made cards to accompany those gifts. Monday morning we cooked a hot breakfast of bacon, eggs and pancakes for about 100 homeless people through Bread 'n Jams, the homeless outreach located in the basement of the church we meet in. Later in the week, we decorated about 200 Christmas cookies for two homeless outreaches in Harvard Square. Pastor Russ turned Christmas stockings into dog heads. (Just picture it. The toe of the stocking becomes the dog's nose. Very creative!) We had lots of fun and laughed and laughed at each other's creations. Just before our gifts were delivered to the families, we learned of another family that would be without gifts. Not knowing what to do, we gave from what we had to this family and was heading out to buy more things. Within hours, we were given 4 huge boxes of new toys to distribute where we knew there was a need. It truly is true that you can never outgive God. Whenever we give what we don't have and are forced to dig deeper in our pockets, He turns around and fills those pockets to overflowing. Would we have gotten that call about the extra gifts, if we hadn't given to that new family? Perhaps maybe. I am led to think not. We marvel at God's goodness and greatness this Christmas. Merry Christmas to all!

Autumn Compassion Service
Every few months, Grace Street hosts a church service wholly dedicated to bringing material aid and love to others. The fourth Sunday evening of October was used for this purpose. At this service, we prepared 11 Thanksgiving baskets for needy families in the Cambridge area. These baskets consisted of mostly non-perishable food items designed to make a complete Thanksgiving dinner, a turkey, hand-written recipes cards, personalized cards made by each team member for the family, and lots of love! The congregation was divided into teams and each team was assigned a family to collect food for, and then at the Compassion Service to construct all the extras for the Thanksgiving baskets.
A few days before we were to deliver the baskets, we unexpectedly were given 11 free turkeys, therefore we were able to take the collected $200 designated for turkeys and filled the baskets to overflowing with staples and treats (brown sugar, chocolate chips, butter, cake mix...).
Our next Compassion Service is scheduled for December.
